Pride in Chinatown: The Intersection of Queer and Chinese Culture
Artist Paul Wong presents the idea that his immigrant culture making it hard to embrace his queer culture. It's been 50 years since homosexuality was decriminalized, but here we are still fighting. Learn more about the Vancouver Pride events going on this weekend: https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/vancouver-pride-events-2018 Paul Wong is curating Pride in Chinatown as part of Alternative Pride Vancouver 2019. This event is especially significant because it's taking place in Chinatown, where Pride was never really celebrated "out, loud, and proud". “I think the Chinese community in Canada, for a hundred years, legalized discrimination and were not treated as equals. And I think that generated a code of silence within the community, never to revolt against the mainstream,” Wong says. “When you've been a discriminated community and never felt welcome or safe, you don't want to be noticed and you don't want to be different.” Find more details about Pride in Chinatown: https://vancouverchinesegarden.com/experience/events/pride_in_chinatown_2019/ SUBSCRIBE to Daily Hive on YouTube: http://bit.ly/DailyHive-YT VISIT Daily Hive: http://DailyHive.com FOLLOW US on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dailyhivevideo

Another feather in her bonnet - Kent Monkman and Jean Paul Gaultier
Another Feather In Her Bonnet represents the symbolic union of two artists who have come together to challenge ideas of cultural appropriation. Miss Chief Eagle Testickle , Kent Monkman’s shape-shifting, time-travelling, gender-fluid alter ego, and world renowned French couturier Jean Paul Gaultier exchanged vows of mutual respect and compassion. Monkman and Gaultier aim to re-contextualize and re-appropriate the faux headdress, playing on the figure of the sexualized and stereotyped Indigenous woman as perceived by the colonial gaze.
